those beautiful chocolate eyes
are not looking for a savior
they’re in love with who they are
even when they’re not sure about that yet
their faces are round with hope
seeing what is hidden from those of us
who have been crushed by the World’s reality
they know their blood is thick and rich
with histories twisted by hateful tongues
seeking to rob them of their wealth
but if you look closely
you’ll understand what they understand
that their roots dig deeper
so they can grow taller
their memories stretch further back
so they can remember
the sun shines brighter
so they can flourish.
And they do.
